Very nice work indeed with a good composition of figures and great painting.

There is a real ‘feel’ of the period here in my opinion.

I note that the officers facings are yellow suggesting cavalrymen, whereas the Engineers had buff facings.

However, by 1864 the uniforms, with the exception of North Carolina troops, were getting pretty haphazard .

Great work.

Best wishes,

Chris

Very nicely painted and detailed. The action is quite nice and gives a realistic feel and shows them building a fairly permanent defensive work. Quick earthworks during the war were generally horizontally stacked logs (usually pine) packed with dirt on the outward side. Only a few horizontal posts would hold everything up from the back edge where a ditch would be dug for the men to stand or kneel in.

A very fine diorama and a convincing depiction of Confederate sappers at work, supervised by their officers! I like the painting and the way that the earthworks and planks are depicted very much. I also like the way that you have extended the sub-strata of the ground, so that we see the earth and rocks beneath the working surface. Great work!

A beautiful piece of work, very imaginatively realized. I very much like your bleached out, subtle palette - those uniforms look like they have seen a lot of sun!

A small diamond, with original composition and your very peculiar and effective style of painting.
Well done Tullo, best compliments

I also think that they show an outstanding painting performance. The uniforms look just great, also dei earthworks look great.

Nice diorama with some really excellent painted figures!

But as a former engineer, can you please tell me what they are building? :eh:

Yes … tullo ….you have developed a peculiar way of painting that makes your work stand out from the crowd. Very muted colors, extremely well painted in what I believe is a wet on wet technique. As such it is very different from most foundry style painters. I for one love subtle variations in colours and your blending is second to none.
Your groundwork is also splendid and to put the icing on the cake your photography seems to add further to the mystery surrounding your painting media/techniques.
Look forward to seeing more of your work. Thanks for showing here on Bennos!
