Sunday of the Dead, Libyan Desert, November 23, 1941

Posted by Bill Slavin on 12 Mar 2023, 15:15

I had my old WWII toys out of the cupboard again, as my friend and I alternate between Napoleonic Peninsular War scenarios and working our way chronologically through WWII!
After Crete we moved on to North Africa. It was a great game, although the German player had a bad day. I have a very lengthy (but, I think, exciting!) battle report here:

Here are a few photos from the fight.

Very nice action report.

I used to ‘game’ the western Desert with micro tanks when I was a young whippersnapper.

This brings back many memories of SHQ hordes of PZKW 11 and 111 along with Italian self propelled coffins.

Great stuff .

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks, Chris. I have always loved the idea of micro armour - part of me wishes I had gone down that road.
Italian self-propelled coffins? I guess that’s about right…

Thanks, Rich. Things seem to photograph very well against the sand ground cloth, I find.

Hi Bill,

Skytrex were another company and then along came GHQ with their beautiful little models.

Everything then looked like what it was …. a casting with a steel pin for a barrel.

Great fun nevertheless.

Fine pictures of this action 'somewhere in the western desert', The figures and vehicles look great; I particularly like the Valentines and the 2 pounder A/T portee (what make is that model?). Inspiring stuff! :yeah:

The portee was a wargamer build for me by a friend, Steve Guthrie, a modeller extraordinaire who has written a number of books on Canadian AFV’s. One of my prized possessions!

Well that portee is a very fine model, and Mr Guthrie is clearly a talented modeller. :yeah:

Inspirational stuff, Bill.

My wargaming pals have been assembling Western Desert forces. I'm not contributing but your photos & report make me even keener to be part of a game.

Yes, it's a different sort of game, Donald. Wide open spaces, no where to hide, and playing a period where the infantry man didn't have a lot of tools at hand to deal with the armour!
