What was your first set of 1/72 figures?

My first set was the Revell Pretorians in 1995! The Romans in there were more "Hollywood"-like than historical, but I loved playing with these.

My first set was the Airfix U.S. Marines type I set. There is a picture of me with them from about 1977. I recall we used small bits of chewed chewing gum to affix them to a simple diorama of cardboard with felt-pen terrain drawn on, and small plastic palm trees from a pirate-themed birthday cake. I had considerable help from mom and dad, since I would have been around 5 and 1/2 or so at the time. All figures were unpainted!

I have a bad habit of saving the boxes as well....I'm assuming those boxes are empty! That would be a lifetime of painting.

I have quite a large 'bits box' & although I thought I had salvaged nothing of my childhood Airfix sets I discovered, at the bottom, an Afrika Korps figure. No base or feet but still looking menacing.

As I have no interest in WW2 North Africa, he must have ended up in my box from his purchase decades ago.

I'd repair it for old times sake but it appears quite brittle.

actually they are almost all filled with figures. I have been buying these, and they only have been opened for seeing, and later i close them and i put into my warehouse.

OK a rummage of the attic turned up these figures. The British commandos were part of a beach assault kit I bought at Woolworth's 5 & 10 in 1974. Didn't like the DUK or the plastic trench so they went by the way side. Such is the mind of a 10 year old. These were the first figures I ever bought with my own money, which when you consider how cheap I am, explains why I still have them. Don't know when I got the rest (Africa Corp and WWI Germans) but I don't think it was long after.

Hi all,
My first set was the Italeri Imperial Romans that I bought back in 2002 as I needed a change from painting Warhammer figures. I knew nothing about the 1/72 miniature range so I found it really cool seeing boxes of Greeks, Persians and Celts on the store shelf, and at an affordable price too
I remember the Romans being pretty fun to paint as well.

Thanks, I'm happy I've found this forum Well, I kind of liked the colourful appearance of the Celts so I bought a few boxes of those while getting some more Romans. It's been fun painting them since they are so different; the Romans mostly look all the same while the Celts have all kinds of variation in colour.


The Italeri Romans painted up


Celtic cavalry(Italeri). I made my first conversion with these, using the upper body from a footman to make the leader on the white horse.

I've been having a long hiatus from painting miniatures but have currently come back to the 1/72 scale. I'm amazed at all the historic periods that is covered by the 1/72 scale and the Plastic Soldier Review has been really helpful in getting an overview on it all and what sets to buy. I've left the Roman & Celts behind me and are now painting my first Assyrians(from Caesar) having been interested in that empire for some time. I recently bought the computer version of Field of Glory and was quite pleased with how it played so I have a loose idea of making a starter Assyrian army for that ruleset.

Type I WWII U.S. Paratroopers from Airfix or a knock-off version. I was about 4 or 5 and my parents created a simple diorama of cardboard with foliage drawn on in colored pen. Figures were unpainted, and small pieces of chewed gum were used to affix them to the base. I recall a palm tree from my pirate birthday cake was also included, so they were not correct for the ETO! My mother has a picture of me playing with it, I will try to track it down and post it.

My first set was the British Combatgroup. Bought it early 70-ties . I remember playing with them, together with the German soldiers. Buying Airfix vehicles and did a lot of "self-made wargames"
I still have some of them.
