Getting back to basics...

Posted by Benno on 30 Aug 2015, 19:08

For two years we've had the other scales besides 1/72 on the forum. I'm happy to see that a large number of forum members also feel that they can post their non 1/72 work there. :-D However, I've often heard that people liked the forum mainly because of its focus on 1/72. If you look at how busy the 1/72 forum is, you can still say it is this forum's main focus.

Although the forums for the other scales are popular, they aren't as busy as the 1/72 forum. My idea is to put the 1/72 scale forum back as "how it once was", and combine all the other scales into one forum, with a similar set up to the 1/72 forum. An example is shown below:

20mm - 1/72 scale
    - Gallery
    - Work in Progress
    - Miniatures News
    - Miniatures Talk
    - Modelling
    - General

Other scales
    - Gallery
    - Work in Progress
    - Miniatures News
    - Miniatures Talk
    - Modelling
    - General

This would emphasize that this forum is mainly for 1/72 figures, while at the same time accepting other scales to be posted as well.

What does everybody think about this?

On one hand I read every post here. Not dealing with the question in which part of the forum. So I did not have any focus on a special catagory. On the other hand maybe it is important to some others, or it is better for you? My anser is: "Whatever!" ;-)

I don't know if this is a good idea. I think we have a very nice overview now.

I personally always use the "unread posts" button to read all the posts. When I opened it tonight I saw that I have 93 posts. So something has changed, but I didn't have the time yet to figure out what.

i Like the Forum like it is. Which posts i read depends on the period. I like artwork in any scale.
But i know, this is work for you ,Benno.
And if you can save some more time for you (and maybe your girlfriend) follow your idea.

I like the idea because it allows teaching work with other scales but is the essence that binds us and we like, that is the 1/72 scale.

That I agree with. Bin the other scales.

Note that hardly any of the painters, and there´s a lot of them, of 28m, the main wargaming scale, have joined here. Why? There´s enough Forums for them out there and after 2 years it´s unlikely that more will join.

I agree... 1/72 and the rest of the world ;-) ... Before you judge me, I paint 6mm, 28mm and 54mm as well (yes, I like metric system scales  )

As Peter, I mostly use "View unread posts" too.

I do like the current overview, and I understand more emphasis should be put on 1/72 which is the house special dish. Maybe you can isolate 1/72 scale as you suggest and keep other scales without subforums (see below), and create and ad-hoc space for Miniature News for all scales between "20mm - 1/72 scale" and "Other scales"

20mm - 1/72 scale
- Gallery
- Work in Progress
- Miniatures News
- Miniatures Talk
- Modelling
- General

Other scales
- 1/48 and larger scales
- 25mm - 28mm
- 15mm - 18mm
- Small scales (10mm, 6mm, 1/600, etc)

I think Benno´s idea is good. This way the forum is for those who mostly paint 1/72nd scale and IF someone wants to try another scale (like myself the last time) he can still show his work here!

If there have to be changes then this suggestion is better as the original one from Benno. In this way the scales will not be mixed.

I'd say that Peter is right.

No problem with seeing good work in different scales every now and then - but for that, I mainly follow my own list of different blogs.
This place has always remained something like a 1/72 haven and that's what it's known for.

I've always been a big supporter of keeping seperate forums for most of the scales (it's more clear). The thing is, there isn't enough activity in these "other scales forums" to justify them having seperate forums and subforums.

I did a quick count to see how many topics were started this month in all the other scales forums combined: 17 topics in total. For comparison: in the 1/72 miniatures gallery forum alone, 27 topics were started in August.

Conclusion: One 1/72 subforum had almost twice as many new topics as all the other scales forums combined!

Removing the other scales completely is out of the question. This forum wasn't 1/72 miniatures only before we went "all scales" (we had a smaller scales gallery remember). Forum members should still be able to post their other work if they please (heck, even I paint more 6mm than 1/72 and I would like to show it in my own forum! :-D ).

Even something like this might work:

20mm - 1/72 scale
    - Gallery
    - Work in Progress
    - Miniatures News
    - Miniatures Talk
    - Modelling
    - General

Other scales
    - Gallery
    - Work in Progress
    - General (includes news and modelling)

In the scenario above the "other scales" still have more than enough subforums than its activity justifies.

Most people visit this forum for its 1/72 stuff, so it's that what should be shown more prominently at the top.

Those are my 2 cents. :-D
