15mm Norman Army

Posted by gregmita on 02 Sep 2010, 06:07

This is an army I just painted for a campaign with a local DBA gaming group. These are actually the first 15mm miniatures I've ever painted, since I usually work with 1/72 scale. All the figures are from Essex.

Nice work on these Essex figures ( they can be a bit tricky to paint, I know I have painted a lot of Essex figures over the years but they are worth it in the end )

Very skilful brushwork applied to these splendid little Normans. In particular I love the bareheaded cavalry and don't think for a second that yours truly missed the reins which appear to fit exquisitely into the rider's hands :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: How did ya do it?

If I had to find fault I'd say that the white stones you use look a bit too big for my liking. Try breaking up a brick with a hammer and separating the pieces a couple of times using different sized sieves to get a more varied and natural look to the stones if ,that is, you haven't got a finer gauge of ballast. I also find that baking powder (bicarbonate of sodium) works very nicely on small scale bases for added variation.

Would love to see more close-ups of your ordinary ranks heavy cavalry. Nice blog ........added to my favourites. Congratulations on a beautiful little army!

Thanks everyone!

k.b.: I actually use kitty litter for the rocks. Since I usually do 28mm and 1/72, they are not too big for those. But you're right, for 15mm they are rather out of place. I'll be using broken up rocks for my next set of 15s.

You didn't tell me how ya did the horse reins! Is it some kind of sticky tape cut into thin strips? Am presently experimenting with the same and it seem like it will do the trick once the stickiness has been removed with turps or white spirits!

Sorry I missed this message for a while, but I didn't do anything with the reins, honest! :) It's actually just good Essex sculpting, and painted with a "magic wash" to bring out the detail.
