Am presently fiddling around with some 28mm figures. These chaps are Warlord 28mm hard plastic Republican Romans. I must say what a welcome change they make from my usual Napoleonics. Not much assembly work, and after finishing the Roman contingent will come the more daunting task of painting up their barbarian enemies........ I bought the SPQR starter set and boy was i disappointed with what i got for my money - especially in terms of the Romans. A very few options available and we are obliged to build only 5 Romans with pilums and shield, 5 with sword and shield and we have 2 sword wielding officers, 2 musicians and 2 standard bearers and NOT the 8 Romans with gladius and 8 with pilums that are described on the box. Besides Warlord's misleading content description i have to admit they are delightful figures to paint. i haven't painted any Victrix or Aventine to be able to compare them but one day i will hopefully get to grips with a few. Loved the grimacing faces on some of them and obviously i thoroughly enjoyed researching shield motifs, and ultimately decided on the angry black bull which i saw on the shields of some reenactors. Needless to say it was a challenge being able to hand paint the bulls on their shields. Obviously i wasn't able to reproduce any of them exactly the same size but it adds to the realism I'd say. Here's what i've painted up to now..... see what you think.
In a short breather from my zulus i found time to finish another Roman who was lying around doing nothing.
Decided to add a blood- stained bandage to his right arm, he has a bloody left knee and when his shield has been varnished i intend to add some splattered blood. That way if i don't like it i can just wash it off and try again until i get it right.
Here's a snapshot of an unfinished accompanying musician. Am wondering whether to paint the bearskin a darker brown or black. I think it will frame better the finely sculpted face.
