Warlord Epic Scale ACW

Posted by PaulRPetri on 30 Jan 2022, 16:48

Gallery is such an imposing word. But here are some of my most recent painting efforts in this 13.4mm scale?! I am a year late to the party on this one but thats okay.
Two 3 stand regiments of Rebels. I also painted the barn in the background it is an MDF kit from Sarissa. I used contrast paint for the red, worked like a charm.
The figures come in 10 figures but they are all attached at the shoulders. I thought this may pose a problem painting but it did not. In fact it made the painting go much faster.

Thanks for looking.

They look fantastic Paul!

13.4 mm is a bit of a strange scale or is it just me, thinking that way? :eh:

Some time ago I painted 12mm romans.
That's why I admire your work.
Really very nice figs.
Maybe some pictures a little bit closer to the figs?

Yes Peter 13.4mm is a brand new one of a kind scale. Warlord Games started this project at the start of last year and have since moved into Napoleonic Epic scale. I fell into the hype as I bought the starter set for $118 us dollars and I got 2400 soldiers for that. These figures are done in plastic however the second and third wave releases were done in metal with a huge price increase. I am waiting on an order from Kallistra miniatures out of the UK for some 12mm fill in troops as even with the very expensive shipping rates they are way cheaper than the Warlord metal figures.

Thanks Konrad for your very kind comments. I painted some Pendragon 10mm SYW figures many years ago so I had some experience in painting small figures. It is a very different mind set.

Great paint job on this diminutive scale figures, Paul. They look fantastic. :notworthy:

Many years ago, I also tried painting 15, 10, 6 and even 2mm metal figures, but now I prefer without any doubt the 20mm plastic ones. ;-)

These look very good ! However.....

I have to say that, when I first heard of this Warlord Games initiative I was hoping that the new figures would be compatible in scale with existing 15mm figures. Sadly, they are not. And they are most definitely not compatible with larger 15mm/18mm figures, a different scale altogether.

So, with this Epic range, Warlord are carving a new course in the world of wargaming. If it attracts newcomers to the hobby, then great. And I can see the charm of this, since they are providing in effect ready-made armies, with rules, scenery and all else that you need, at an attractive price.

But...it is not 10mm, 15mm; or 18mm, or 20mm. So if you want to use these figures, you have to buy Warlord Games products...'cause there is nothing else which mixes in with these figures.

You are correct Minuteman they are more or less on their own as far as true scale goes. To be honest this is the first time in my 40 years in the hobby that I was sucked into a sales pitch. But I do have two other fellow travellers working on this project with me so misery enjoys company.

Actually Mabo I can paint one unit, three stands in the pictures, which is 60 figures in about 3 hours. The problem is that I can't sit that long in one stretch anymore!!

Thanks Santi for the kind words. I still love my 1/72 armies.

Not very stylish but here is the painting progress I have made in the last few months. Shot from a distance as I believe that is the best way to view these figures and use them for wargaming.

That is one heck of an army Paul. How many troops do you have there? Are they enjoyable to paint and how many highlights/washes/dry brushing layers are you needing to do? I'm quite fascinated by the whole Epic ACW and Nap series-managing to have such huge armies for a relatively low cost and they look so good when massed together. If only I had more time for painting!

Thanks Rich I sort of just got into the swing of it. Each infantry base has 20 guys on it. I actually just count the bases I finish which means 2 strips of figures per base. I gave up keeping track of how many figures that is. I changed my painting style as I worked through them. So now they get primed grey rattle can, then I spray white paint, rattle can again, on an angle, there is a name for this but it escapes me. I then use contrast paints from GW and the Speed paints from Army painter. Metal gun barrel is the regular stuff. The problem is the figures are very well done with tons of detail but you will never see it if you are wargaming. So you just have to live with the effect. I dont even paint the hair or beards it is just a flesh wash. In mass it looks good to me.

Very nice indeed and excellent numbers for war gaming in the grand manner.

My late friend Peter used to say that if the troops looked good the detail was not so important when painting wargame units. He had eighteen thousand and they looked superb.

Best wishes ,

They do look very good, especially given their diminutive size. That said, I am conflicted about Warlord introducing yet another scale (as if 2, 6, 10, 15, 20 & 28mm weren't enough choices!) A bit of a double edged sword in that a variety of sizes means more people will get involved but may not be able to put their figures on the same table for a game. I like the affordability aspect of the big boxed set in plastic but have doubts whether absolute beginners would want to spend the time painting them all. So long as you have gaming mates in to the same scale it's all good. I hope you find these just as rewarding as any other scale.

Bessiere I have dragged in two of my fellow wargaming pals to join in on the fun. They are supposed to do the Union but I am making my way in that direction as I am finishing up the Rebels at a fairly good pace.
Kekso painting miniature figures is a form of therapy for me. As you probably can tell I need a lot of therapy...
31 years as a Policeman will do that too you. Oh well.

Wow, a huge painted army! These look very fine.

I still have reservations about the 'intermediate scale' chosen by Warlord Games, but if I wanted to start from scratch with an ACW wargames army smaller than 1/72 ('20mm') scale, then these would definitely be on the shortlist.
