28mm Crusader Infantry by Fireforge Games

Posted by T. Dürrschmidt on 06 Mar 2022, 21:42

Hi there,

I am a big fan of medieval footsoldiers and also of multipose figures. So I had to do some of Fireforge´s 28mm medieval "foot sergeants", a quite generic set of feudal European infantry for the 13th century, converted with parts from other Fireforge sets. There are some weaknesses, like the fact you get figures wearing chainmail under the gambeson. This happens, when you interact freely with parts of differents packs.

So here are some foot troops and mercenaries of the knights Templar, as they could have appeared in Outremer during the 13th century. I did some catapult crew figs also, converted with pewter heads from Mirliton.

I am not a wargamer and I think this time I won´t use the figs for a diorama....just for fun toy soldiers.

If you try to seach for the correct heraldry of the Templar order, you have many choices, which are probably not correct in a historical context. Black over white, white over black, white with different kinds of crosses. The only contemporary wall painting of a knight templar (or a mounted sergeant) shows a shield white over black with a small BLACK cross in the white area. And if you search the internet, the confusion becomes perfect.....so I decided for a compromise between historic and good looking. ;-) ....and I like to paint heraldry.

The catapult is a rubber model by Whiz Kids, with some more details added by me.
The mounted sergeant you can see in the background is from a Conquest Games plastic set.

Have fun watching the images.

Thomas

Hello Thomas,

I am also a fan of the black and white of the Teutonic order knights. You created a cool army. Thanks for posting.

WOOOW ! Stunning work Thomas…… like you I have longed to get to grips with some of Fireforge’s Medievals. Unlike you, I’ve never got round to it. Maybe you have inspired me to get some - I have had my eyes on their Mongol cavalry for a long long time.

I just love your beautiful earthy colours…… and your representation of metal is beautiful. Black and red and white mixed with metal armour really is a terrific combination. I also love what you have done with the bases as you are able to group them closely together which makes them particularly impressive when they’re massed together and it most surely best represents how they fought on the battleground (at least before they engaged the enemy)! It must have been petrifying to have faced a group of these fellows.

I think yours truly would have most likely found a horse and beat a hasty retreat!?!

Very cool! What technique did you use for the metal items?

Earthy coloration, love it. Armor has that steely look, worn to battle not parade. I like your palette, it fits these lovely sculpts. I'm with Mabo and kb on the black and white scheme. I consider it austere and uh, business-like? Befitting the Teutonic order imho.

Very nice indeed.

The faces are excellent and there is a ‘feel’ of the time about them.

Best wishes,

Chris

It´s just a layer of liquid silver bronze over black undercoat. Sometimes added black ink afterwards for a more battle worn look. The effect is so much better than usual metallic model paints, except the old mithril silver by GW.
