Fantastic!

Posted by Ochoin on 04 Aug 2024, 00:23

I've placed an order for 5 boxes of Dark Alliance 1/72 Fantasy figures.
The range is 'Lord of the Rings' knock-offs & I'm creating a Half-Orc army - pikemen, warg-riders, trolls etc all lead by a figure that looks suspiciously like the film's Saruman.

This will be my first & probably last, foray into Fantasy. The boxes are dirt-cheap & I will make a 50 or so figure force for Dragon Rampant.
One of our number very much likes Fantasy & I figure our Lion Rampant forces can also be used eg my Late Roman-period Huns as some sort of barbaric Easterlings if I add a shaman.

Now were can I get a shaman.....

Those Dark Alliance figures are really good quality. I enjoyed painting some, so I’m sure you will! Which sets did you get?

A troll set, half-orc infantry & half-orc phalanx. Half-orc warg riders & Black Riders. 5 boxes. I'll only need about 50 figs for Dragon Rampant but if I paint them all I'll have enough for an army in the bigger battles my pal is intending to run.

I'd have liked a missile option (not enough figures in the infantry box) but I guess the Saruman-figure can "throw" a few spells.

I basically have no idea how to paint them but I intend searching here at Bennos to pick the brains of my (more talented) predecessors.

Hey Donald. I have a big plastic tube of unpainted "Not LOTR Figures" but I did manage to paint a few.
A troll trying to squash some Dwarfs.

But the big troll failed and died poor fellow.

I am sadly remiss with the Fantasy figures produced by the talented members of Bennos.

Because I wasn't interested in the genre, I never gave them much of a look.
However, I now find 40 pages of Fantasy on the site - with painted figures by masters such as Atalante, Blacksmith, Rich, Steve, your good self & others.
Joy! So much to look at & gain inspiration.

And, last, the old classic! Esci Barbarian warriors (I think they are rereleased by Italeri):

Looking forward to see your foray into another realm

Half-Orcs are Uruks and the best way to paint them is as they are depicted in the movies . You can take inspiration by visiting Games Workshop web shop and and surfing the LOTR section.
Here's a pic of mine. Basecoated with black spray, some drybrush with grey, paint flesh and metal and done:

In this link you can access to my whole 1/72 gallery for inspiration: https://javieratwar.blogspot.com/search/label/Gallery.%201%2F72%20plastics
