The Battle of Belchite June 18th, 1809

Posted by Bill Slavin on 29 Jan 2024, 15:05

A couple of weeks ago my friend and I got into another of Brian North’s Spanish/French scenarios, this one based on the Battle of Belchite, June 18th, 1809. It follows up chronologically the battles of Alcaniz and Maria, which we had played previously. From Brian’s introduction:

“Belchite is the third and final battle in the duel between the III Corps of Louis-Gabriel Suchet and the Army of Aragón y Valencia of Joachim Blake for control of Aragon in 1809. It takes place a mere three days after the Spanish defeat at Maria, which had thoroughly demoralized the Spanish army, filled up as it was with thousands of new recruits. In fact, when he paraded his army at Belchite, Blake discovered that he had lost about 2,000 men who had disbanded to return home, in addition to the heavy losses at Maria. As a result, even after incorporating Areizaga’s division that had not fought at Maria, Blake was only able to put about 12,000 men in line. For the first time he is at a numerical disadvantage to Suchet, who had called in Laval with his first brigade (2,000) in addition to the reinforcements (3,000) that Robert brought at the crisis of the Battle of Maria. Suchet, in his memoirs, claims that Blake received reinforcements of 4,000 men from Valencia on the eve of the battle, but both Spanish accounts and Oman consider this the usual exaggeration by French marshals. Historians therefore have difficulty understanding why Blake chose to risk battle again with his army’s morale shaken.”

Tell me about it! As the Spanish commander things could only go badly for me, although the Spanish started bravely enough. But halfway through there was a massive ammunition park explosion that caused a third of the defenders to bolt.
The game was played on a 6’ X 10’ table, using my 1/72 scale toy soldiers and the Over the Hills rules.

Very intense and vivid depiction of a battle.

What I like most about your Peninsular War settings is the variety of uniforms and heterogeneous armies.
The Spanish, of course, with all those regional regiments, each with its own personality, but also the French with the foreign units (I can only recognize the Poles but I think there are others) and even the French look less smartly dressed than in most of the representations.
If you look at Goya's paintings of the time, the French soldiers look more brown than blue.
I like your armies a lot!

Joan

Thanks, all. I appreciate the kind comments.
Joan, I think the only French allies at this battle and on this table are the Poles, and technically they should be wearing shakos in Spain, not the czapka, but that would be boring. I guess I used some Italians as well as stand-ins for the French 14th Line who were still in the old white uniform. But you are right, the campaign uniforms became pretty dodgy over time, so I like to muddy them up a bit - like yours!
But the Spanish do win the prize for the most diversely uniformed army on the Napoleonic battlefield. I'm currently painting up a unit in the old blue 1802 line infantry uniform, as a number of Spanish units still wore that in 1808-09.

Excellent battling Bill with a huge amount of work undertaken to provide the visual triumphs.

Your Spanish are a delight and indeed I was looking at the Hat infantry to represent Austrian volunteers recently.

Unfortunately it appears my lot wore the Corsehut not a bicorne which is a pity.

Keep up the good work, you are Mr Peninsular!

Best wishes,

Chris

Hi Chris,
I assume you took a look at the HaT Austrian Landwher? That is a very nice set which I have used for some of my Spanish militia.

Hi Bill.

Yes I got a lot of these when they first came out so I am in business.

My wife is not happy about me being distracted from Antietam as she wants more access to the garage.

She does have a point.

Best wishes,

Chris
