AIRFIX 54mm question

Posted by Bramble15 on 03 Apr 2014, 17:57

I just stumbled upon a couple auctions on EBAY for 4 different AIRFIX 54mm mounted napoleonic models. Question - are these new items? I did not see them in their online catalogue. I wonder if they are older kits that I am just oblivious to.
Question - quality, are they worth buying?
Question - is there a relationship to Historex?
Question - general thoughts....

Thanks Rich

Hi,

as far as I know these are hard plastic multi part kits. (originally from the 70s or even late 60s?!?), reissued in the 90s. Quality is good but compared with contemporary sculpting standard not the best. But it´s fun to build and with a skillful coat of paint these will look beautiful I think. I am not very familiar with the Napoleonic era, so I can´t say anything about historical correctness.

I was thinking of buying those figures few days ago (French Imperial Guard infantryman). Everything seemed ok but then I realized I would need to cut straps and belts from a plastic sheet (supplied in kit). That made me to gave up on purchase.

I have the whole range but most of all because I am a collector. There are only a few re-released in the 90th. I think Thomas is right. It is fun to paint them and it is as well a trip in the past. As far as I can see they are quite ok. dealing with historical correctness.

So...catch them ;-)

I think I have two of them myself! The belts and straps kept me of building them! ;-)

@Jan: do you have them all? 18 figures?

Have a look here: http://www.vintage-airfix.com/figures/5 ... 64_69.html

Awesome information guys. Thank you! I think I may try to get my hands on one to see if I like it. The auctions I saw where for either a 2 or 4 figure lot. I think I'll just wait to grab one.

I have built many of these figures over the years, my solution to the plastic card supplied for the straps was to throw it away & use lead foil you get much better results.

Have built some of them and can only recommend them. They are fun to build and paint. And, Jan. I am very impressed and it would be nice to see them.
