Museum on Texel (Ned)

Posted by Martin on 06 Oct 2008, 21:45

Hi,
Last weekend I was on Texel. This is a small island in the north-west of the Netherlands. It is one of the Wadden-islands.
On this island I visited the Maritime museum.
And to my surprise I found a huge diorama of "de Rede van Texel in 1665" in English: The Roads of Texel 1665"
Ships could find shelter there against the west winds of the North Sea.
This huge diorama was 18 x 4 meters and on it were about 50 ships, all handmade and about 4000 figures. Scale 1:87.
In 1665 Holland was in war with England and Holland had the biggest fleet of the world: merchant ships (VOC) and war ships.
It was our "Golden Age" and also the age of Rembrandt and others.
How things change in 343 years.
After 4 photo's my camera stopped and my reserve batteries turned to be empty as well.
What a pity, otherwise I would have taken a lot of pics.
Also there were about 100 builings and one of them was the "Schans" = Redoubt.
But here are my pics:

I wanted to share them with you all.

Hi Ruben,
As I wrote before, there are over 50 vessels.
A couple of frigates, 8 major battleships of 50+ canon, some VOC merchant ships, some small ones.
I think there we over 10 different kind of ships, all handmade.
They show a video how they made'm.
Also the houses of the town Oudeschild were studied.
Pictures were made of existing 17th Century houses.
It looks impressive.

@Konrad: you're right about the campers and everything else they can go on a camping  But they're friendly and that is the most important!

@Martin: go back and take more pictures. I think for me this is a three hours drive, on ship, mh I think three days if I row very hard :joker:
Great pictures and thanks for sharing!

Greetings Peter
