Turcos and Bavarians

Posted by Iceman1964 on 05 Aug 2024, 08:11

The Franco-German war of 1870 was decided by the battle of Sedan, causing the end of the empire of Napoleon III and the birth of the German Empire.

Before this decisive event other preliminary battles were fought, one of them in Woerth, where the fight in the woods was between the French colonial troops “Tirailleurs Algeriennes” (nicknamed “Turcos”) and the Bavarians (now allied of those Prussians they fought just 4 years before in the Austro-Prussian war).
The clash was fierce, and despite their numerical inferiority the French resisted and counterattacked, but the Germans eventually won and the Turcos of the 2nd regiment remained with 450 men on 3000, a massacre.

This diorama will show a Turcos attack routing the Bavarians; the figures are from Massimo Costa (“42nd Black Watch”).

First the figures, top quality as usual, in term of sculpting, details and poses.

Extremely original this pose with a riflemen without ammunitions taking the bullets from his dead companion on the side, I love it !

Then the first phases of the diorama preparation: the joint of the cork parts and the creation of the base

The definition of the figures position and the rocks assembly, with bushes and trees.

The title

And the first Turco completed.

Stay tuned and happy summer

A promising start to what is sure to be a fantastic new diorama, Enrico. The base looks great, as does the first of the Turcos.

I will, of course, follow this project with the greatest interest. ;-)

Go on with them, my friend!

Why is it that the quality of the new figures does not surprise me, Enrico?

And I also love how well they fit together to form little scenes within the overall ensemble.

Great work again, my friend!

These interactions between figures are surely the most realistic I have ever seen. Massimo really is a master. Undoubtedly being a personal friend of Bill Horan has supplied plenty of inspiration and played a huge part in his journey as a sculptor.
Love this thread. Your painting has done them full justice Iceman.
Now I really must place an order for some of these figures!

Thanks all of you !
I totally agree that Massimo has the capability to create super realistic and dramatic poses. Some of the Bavarians I have still to do are further examples of his capability, you will see.
Painting these masterpieces is a real pleasure, and it's also quite easy because all details, even the smaller, are clearly indented on the metal.
Something similar (considering the "industrial" production in plastic) is for Linear figures, a brand really top level now.

Stay tuned
