20mm moderns

Posted by Ben Bob on 06 Nov 2021, 20:19

I just wanted to post a quick update of what I'm working on. The Romans I showed last time were a bit of a chore, so I decided to do something completely different and revisit some Modern 20mm topics. For this I chose the old Vepa 1/72 US Army figures now sold by Empress. They are the best 20mm metal moderns - it's just too bad that most other ranges don't come close.

For now I'm doing a squad in Universal Camouflage Pattern (the grey kind) and another in Multicam (the newer green camo).

Here's an incomplete figure in Multicam. I used my old tutorial (https://benssoldiers.blogspot.com/2016/12/painting-satisfactory-multicam.html) as a basis, but have added some additional fine washes and highlights.

Here's a contrast between the two. I'm doing the UCP guys as 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan in the mid 2000s, and the Multicam ones as contemporary 82nd Airborne.

Impressive and colourful soldiers with astonishing details till the small flag or the dust on the uniforms.

I love the closeups on these, and the figures look accurate. Great work!

I just wanted to share a quick update on some Modern Russians I'm painting. These are made by Alex miniatures, sold by Tankograd internationally. I highly recommend them as the best 20mm Russians available. They go very nicely with the Xan US I have been working on.

Thanks for looking.

Good figures, great painting. I like how you represented Multicam in this small scale. Well done!

I am impressed.

:yeah:

Look so realistic.
As an b/w pic some low intensity and you do not know it it is real or just 20mm figures.

Finished up a couple fireteams. Here is one as a preview.

I also got started on the weapons teams including this M240. They are in the early stages of painting, but it shows the detail well.

I have been wanting to recreate in miniature some of the Russian Special Forces units seen recently in Syria. Elhiem make some figures that will work, and I enjoyed painting them in the past, but my tastes have changed. I prefer the Alex Miniatures Russians now, but they require some modification.

I purchased two of the Alex sets, and some special forces AKs and heads from Elhiem, and did some conversions.

Hopefully I will have a painting update soon.

Thanks for looking!
