painting mdf

I just bought this:

I've only ever painted one mdf building before - not overly to my satisfaction.

Any tips on painting this ecclesiastical structure?

Not sure if you want my advice since I've never painted mdf. Go easy on water and maybe try to find a way to impregnate it with something (PVA with just few drops of water?) before painting.

Well I did two MDF buildings for my Rorke's Drift game, they were Sarrisa. This comment will be of no value to you, probably, but the buildings were used as a shell and I added plaster to the walls, I did the thatched roof in clay on one building and the other go the caulk treatment. The floors inside I basically stained using the Magic Dip, Future floor wax with brown ink added. See picture.

I have made some half assed attempts at constructing my own buildings but I find the MDF stuff gives me the outline and I can then add all the details on. No idea on how to paint them just as they are to look good.

Good Luck Donald keep us posted.

The is an MDF primer available on line or from DIY stores ,it is designed for the job, I have used it on a number of MDF 20mm/1/72 building and it gives a perfect base on which to apply paint or texture. My Italeri Desert FFL fort (pics on Strelets forum contributions) was the last one.

Donald why don't you do a test on the leftover parts?

All the bases I use for my figures are MDF. I just paint them with acrylic paint and I have never had problems with it. I even cover them with woodfiller, sand and paint to create the landscape on it. It is also wet and no problems neither.

I use Sarrissa MDF bases and treat them with Rustins Quick Dry Seal to stop the warping. Seems to have worked well so far...
