28mm Orc army

Posted by PhilC on 14 Jan 2023, 10:37

Hi everyone!
Today, I would like to show something different from my usual 1/72 figures. Since I needed a Fantasy army to play a Kings of War game against my son and his terrifying undead warriors, I gathered all my old Orcs (mostly metal from the 80s and 90s) from their various boxes, and decided to:
- finish those who needed to
- paint the naked ones
- repaint the horrible ones (no "horrible" bonus in that game)
- add some metal (or plastic) reinforcements

... and in the darkness of my workshop, base them all !!

The first troup of warriors is complete:

There's a mix of several manufacturers in here: Citadel, Ral Partha, Genadier, Alternative Armies... and one plastic figure by Warlord Games.

The rest of the army is being processed, as you can see.

Some more Orcs:

Some Trolls by Dark Alliance:

And even some unreliable Goblins allies:

I think I will keep on working on this army all year long, so I will pictures from time to time to show the work progress.

See you ;-)

Those green creatures look splendid painted, Phil, as well as their Troll colleagues. I love also their bases.

Thank you very much! I'm actually trying to finish some of the archers, I hope to take new pictures this month. And I've bought a box of Oathmark Orcs (plastic kit), I should try to paint a couple of these rather soon in order to compare them with figures from other manufacturers. A long time project that I wish to complete for next Orctober!

We're at the end of the year, the archers are ready at last (though late for Orctober)! Here you are the pictures:

This unit includes figures from various manufacturers, for instance this old preslotta Citadel Orc cast (and bought) in 1984:

And also this other archer by Ral Partha I think, though I am not sure:

They're ready for action, and probably will soon be involved in a Kings of War confrontation.

See you tomorrow for the next unit!

Thank you Blacksmith. Absolutely, there are no less than five Grenadier figures in this unit, all sculpted by the great Nick Lund himself. You will see more of his production with the Wolf Riders unit.

Thank you Konrad.

Here you are another unit of the Green Horde, the Heavy Wolf Riders.

Once again, a mix of several manufacturers: Grenadier, Alternative Armies, Old Glory and RAFM. All these figures were bought during the 80s and 90s, waiting to get some paint.

A few close-ups:

And the boss, Takka the Head Cutter (Grenadier figure, sculpt by Nick Lund):

Salut PhilC
Exquisit and delicate painting for some excruciatingly nasty fellas.
Probably I keep repeating myself, but I never understand why Orcs are painted green. Green is the colour of living stuff which adore sunlight - chlorophill - flowers - trees. Orcs live underground and I've never came across a mention as if they can perform photosynthesis. If anybody has suggestions why Orcs are green? I will be very grateful. Until then mine are whitish - yellowish - grey, but they never reach the quality of PhilCs'.
Greetings
Michael

Green, and nothing else to add

And don't be mistaken, my favourite character in that movie is Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker), not Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) :xd:

Hi PhilC,
and another horde "before the end of the year"'!
Like them a lot. Your reference to film 5th Element is as good as any explanation to me. I like the film a lot - to me a kind of family "evergreen" film with all its references.
Today, I use the same extract to mock "greenwashing".
Many greetings
Michael
