Trebuchet, Scale 1:40

Posted by T. Dürrschmidt on 27 Apr 2022, 18:16

I purchased a wooden Trebuchet kit (in German Blide or Tribok) via Ebay. There was no scale mentioned, so I hoped it would fit to 28mm figures. As I received it (from China), I saw "1:72" between all the chinese letters and I thought, this would be great also for my 28mm crusaders....but no.
I made a quite expensive try with 40mm figures by V&V and even those figures looked like little children while standing near the war machine.
So my salvation was 3d Print. I ordered some 28mm Fantasy Trebuchet crew and asked the shop to print it in a special 50mm scale.....it worked.
So I could go on with a small diorama scene and searching for some fitting stuff (ropes, crates, weapons, barrels and so on.) I did this stuff scratch or by plundering other sets I had in my huge collection.

And then I made a big mistake....I covered the wooden (not MDF) base with my wet basing putty (mixing color sand and wood filler) and pressed the trebuchet in the wet ground. I let it dry over night and in the next morning, everything was in a slight banana shape...and finally i dropped it onto the floor by mistake...so I had to do a lot of work to correct it and make the trebuchet work again....yes it works!!!

It has a 300 g counterweight (using stones and steel balls) and can throw a small stone or hard candy about 7 meters. You can wind it up by using the two "hamster wheels"....a funny thing.

By the way, the "pumpkins" are fire pots....

Regards Thomas

Yes, I would say the scale is slightly smaller than 1:35. 1:32 figures are a litte bigger...these were quite odd figures. Their legs were far too long and they looked strange...so I shortened the legs about 4mm....so they are now about 45mm tall...more or less.

Wooow Thomas ! I was going to say it looks real but I would’ve been wrong! It IS real!
The photography is also incredible as are the figures. If I had to find a fault I would say that one or two of the ropes are perhaps not as taut as they could be.
But that is being extremely critical.
Undoubtedly this work is truly fantastic. Welll done!

Fabulous work and the figures are really nice too.

The photography, as always, sets your work off to perfection.

Best wishes,

Thanks guys....here is a very interesting video of a home made trebuchet, built by some guys in Wunsiedel / upper Franconia. It is not very far from where I live. I think I have to visit this.

A fantastic vignette! The photography done outdoors & with natural light is also excellent (as always with your projects), and I also like the background story about the difficulties of this project.

Incredible photography work, really brings it to life. The fact it actually functions is icing on the cake. Lovely model and figures makes this one excellent diorama.

Great modelling and some very fine crew figures too. The Trebuchet was perhaps the ultimate medieval siege engine pre-gunpowder, and an impressive thing it was/is too.

There is a full scale replica of one at Warwick Castle (near Coventry in the English West Midlands) and it is well worth seeing - as is the whole castle of course! https://www.warwick-castle.com/explore/ ... trebuchet/

Right now this machine is not in working order, but I understand that the plan is to restore it so that it can again demonstrate the power of the 'real' (replica) thing,. I saw it in working order some years ago, and watching flaming projectiles being launched from it and sailing through the air was quite impressive.
