Anton Derbilov RIP.

Posted by steve_pickstock on 09 Apr 2023, 12:13

Many of you will be aware of the recent death of Anton Derbilov, the man behind so many recent sets of figures - the Ptolemaic ranges from Linear A, Red Box's '45 range and of course, Strelets' WSS.

https://news.yahoo.com/ukrainian-musici ... 00441.html

This is a huge loss to our hobby, not just because of how prolific he was - just guessing, but there have to be over 300 individual figures in the WSS range alone (so far!), but also because of the quality of his work.

Derbilov's command figures - officers, standard bearers, drummers and NCOs - went above and beyond as far as I am concerned, each one of them was a masterpiece in it's own right. It wasn't just his eye for detail but his sense of posing that made them stand out in the history of little plastic men.

It is a sad fact that war spares no thought for any man or his legacy, but at least Anton Derbilov has left a fine one. Here is a hope that a way is found to end this conflict and that soon all those involved - mechanic, teacher, baker, student, accountant and yes, even makers of toy soldiers - can return to their peacetime lives and carry out their trades in better times.

What terrible, terrible news. Those WSS sets are like something out of a dream.

So sad for Anton's family and all the families who are losing loved ones daily on both sides. I am also quite sad for me because I loved his work. Hopefully he created years worth of masters and we can keep getting new sets for a while longer at least.

This is very sad and very tragic news,. The 1/72 figure sets that Anton Derbliov created - and especially the Strelets War of Spanish Succession range - are exceptional and feature many figures which are individual works of art. He was a very talented sculptor and artist, and his loss to the hobby will be considerable.

His legacy will live on, and let us hope and pray that his death will not have been in vain. My condolences to his family, his comrades-in-arms, and to all at Strelets and Redbox.

With all due respect, all who die on both sides of this hideous war are dying in vain, no matter how it eventually turns out.

How tragic. Anton's art is near and dear to our hearts. Might I suggest we do a painting competition using only his figures? Might make a nice tribute to the man.

I join in all condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Derbilov, as well as in admiration for his work, especially the Strelets range dedicated to the War of Spanish Succession. R.I.P. :(

I feared this when I read that he had gone to the war. Another terrible loss!

I agree, some sort of longer-term tribute to commemorate Anton would be a good idea.

Completely agree, some sort of commemoration, perhaps rather than a competition we create a gallery of painted figures, illustrating Anton's work.

Great idea Steve and Minuteman. I think a permanent gallery showing his figures would be a fitting way to keep his legacy alive here on Bennos.
