A Villa by the Sea

Posted by Santi Pérez on 01 Mar 2026, 21:08

Wow, what a wonderful new collection of pictures, Stephan! These close-ups of different corners of the villa from various angles are truly spectacular. I still remember the first photos you shared with us about this project, those Delphinus milliputus specimens created with modeling clay.

I'm sure Pliny the Younger would be very proud of the superb reproduction you've achieved of one of his villas. :P

I also love learning about the artisanal method of creating the backgrounds with poster-sized photos. I understand that using AI is helpful and effective for some pictures, but for all of yours, it would be an enormous undertaking. ;-)

Once again, thank you!

When I seriously started with dioramas around 25 years ago, the wonderful work of Erik Trauner was an early and important source of inspiration for me. On his website, his scenes were always shown with a suitable background, and he himself wrote, in essence, that the photo session is the climax of every diorama project. And this idea immediately convinced me: If you invest so much work in a diorama, you should then also be prepared to invest work in taking the best possible photos of it.
(BTW, his website seems to be oflfine, which is a pity.)

I completely agree with this idea from Erik and you, Stephan. In fact, the only people who will be able to see the actual dioramas are you, your family and anyone who visits your home or wherever you have them on display. Photos are the way to share them with a wider audience, and the better they are, the better the impression they will make and the better people will remember your work.
