1st Grenadiers of the Old Guard

Posted by Captain Sibourne on 01 Dec 2024, 10:13

I have been working on two battalions of the Old Guard, in this case the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 1st Grenadiers. These two battalions formed the elite, not only of the French Army, but the Imperial Guard itself.

The regiment remained in reserve throughout the battle and is shown around Maison Lacoste to the south of La Belle Alliance.

The figures are a mix of Zvezda and Hinton Hunt with a few others including conversions thrown in. There are about 1,200 figures shown here; this was a huge amount of work and has left me wishing never to see another Old Guard Grenadier ever again!

Having said that, I have now completed ten battalions of Old and Middle Guard, leaving five to finish.

Wow, that's an impressive diorama!
Given my own painting speed, it might take me about 50 years to paint so many figures. But it is not only the sheer numbers; I also like the painting style very much and the photography, too.

Well done Captain.

Another Herculean effort with the satisfaction of wonder at the final result.

Lots going on but I like the dog!

The band looks very good. I was very impressed with a similar outfight playing at the 2015 anniversary.

Best wishes,

Chris

Many thanks to both of you. You are both very fine figure painters whereas I am after mass so I certainly have to cut a few corners to get the effect or I will be long gone before this project is complete!

As always, Captain Sibourne,
overwhelming, fantastic - all superlatives are welcome.
These are dreams to see such dioramas.

Many thanks Michael, I like to see units as they really were rather than as the small groups usually portrayed.

Mind blowing work Captain. Thought I was a stickler for detail but you give a whole new meaning to the expression.
Ps/ love the masses of infantry but what I love the most are the little details such as the horses drinking at the trough, generals browsing over maps etc

Captain Sibourne, I agree with Rich, although I'll rephrase: WOWWW!  :notworthy:

After all this hard work, no wonder you haven't wanted to see another Old Guard Grenadier for a long time.

Very impressive Captain. That is a proper battalion or 2. I see some of the Speira sappers, I love their figures and they match the Zvezda to a T. I love the band too, can;t have too many of those. Monumental effort on your part sir.

Eta; out of curiosity what guard units are still left to do?

Thanks Bessiere, your own horse trough gets a good showing! Those sappers are actually Zvezda in the 1st Battalion and S Range in the 2nd. There are five battalions left to do: 2nd/3rd Grenadiers, 1st and 2nd battalions of the 3rd Chasseurs and 1st and 2nd battalions of the 4th Chasseurs (ie the bulk of the Middle Guard).

Once more it is unbelievable for me, that one man can finish such a huge unit in such a short time!

It would take me years of discipline.

As Michael already said: I hope to see the real thing someday!
