More wonderful photos live from the battlefield Mr D. Crazy to think my great-great-grandfather was with Hoods brigade that very day. Being in the quartermaster corps is doubtless the only reason he survived the war.

Okay, this is ridiculous. You have to stop building beautiful scale models of historic building and then setting them on fire! It’s not healthy. :xd:
Another great chapter, Chris! I especially like the scene of the Union soldiers rounding up the Confederate prisoners. Very nice.

I mentally refer to "Chris' Master Class in modelling".
There are several reasons I have an inferiority complex, & the above photos are a major contributing factor,

However, please do NOT stop posting them. They are a delight.

And the scene of the second picture with the casualties of war is also very nice. In fact, all the scenes pictured are fantastic. :-D

Great job once more, Chris.

Thank you to everyone for their kind comments.

The Mumma farm and barn were built as doubles ala Cecil B De Mill before I set fire to them, thus saving the fully built models.

The garage is now an ice box so I am awaiting a thaw before commencing 8.45AM.

Happy Christmas everyone.

Best wishes,

Chris

More marvellous stuff, with the lingering gun-smoke and burning house all adding to the drama. Each instalment of this series is like looking at stills taken from an epic film of the battle. All very impressive indeed !

Your ancestry is impressive, Bessiere. Good to know that your great-great-grandfather was there, and that he survived too.

The Battle of Antietam ( Sharpsburg) 17th September 1862

Timeline 8.45 AM.

After an intense musketry duel, the veterans of Hoods Division have routed the First Brigade of Second Union Division Lt. Colonel Hector Tyndall sending the survivors and the hapless Major General Mansfield crashing into the advancing Second Brigade, causing it to become disorganised.

Image

Meanwhile, the Union First Division, Twelfth Corps, Brigadier General Alpheus S Williams is continuing up the Smoketown Road, it’s advance being contested by the reorganised Confederate artillery by the Dunkard church.

Image

Image

The Twelfth Corps artillery is deploying through the East Wood in order to render support.

Image

Contemporaneously, Major General Edwin. V. ‘Bull’ Summer has arrived at the head of his mighty Second Corps and is eager for action.

Image

Unfortunately however, General Joseph Hooker commanding the First Corps has just been wounded by a Confederate shell and has passed his command to Brigadier George G. Meade before being removed from the field.

Image

With Mansfield temporarily absent, there is now no co-ordination of command between Second, First and Twelfth Corps.

Major General Thomas J.Jackson now has only six reduced brigades from his initial command of ten although the Divisions of McLaws and Walker are now in position out of sight in the West Wood.

Major General Sumner is determined to deliver the knockout blow to the Army of North Virginia.

Advance!
