Stern action at La Fate...

Posted by Harry Faversham on 03 Oct 2020, 12:27

Just outside Ligny stands La Fate Church at the bottom of a slight ridge of the same name. Marshal Peeair le Tosspot has been tasked with wrenching this vital high ground from the Prussians.

The cannon of the Guard Light Horse boom three times, and the battle's on. Nothing subtle today, no clever feints, just a sledgehammer blow to the right flank then a rolling up of the Prussian line. By accident or design the Prussian commander, General Jurgen von Klopp, has neglected to put all his forces 'in the shop window', an oversight he spends the first few moves correcting!

Having brought forward the Guard Horse Artillery to the slopes of the ridge, Brigadier Gerard leads the Guard Lancers against the Prussian Infantry in front of the wood. The plan is to destroy this Infantry and push the Voltijoors through the woods to harry the Prussian flank. Hit from front and flank by French, Poles and Dutchman the Prussians weather the onslaught and break the first charge!

Sadly, blasted by point blank canister, they break and scatter through the woods. The French are in!

All the while the French columns have been advancing a venomous fire has galled them from the elite Prussian Guards Battalion defending La Fate churchyard, tough men these Guards, showing utter indifference to all the balls coming from the French! The French reserve, Grenadiers of the Old Guard are moved forward, and a fight to the death ensues. The Prussian Foot Guards are destroyed and their French counterparts are decimated, but the Church of La Fate has fallen.

Despite a gallant cavalry counter attack led by Von Klopp in person the French scrape the victory. Brigadier Gerard, bests Von Klopp in single combat and the last Prussian cannon ball of the battle hits La Tosspot on the melon rendering him horse-de-combat!
