Building a Tlaxcalan army for DBA

Posted by Kaiphranos on 26 Jan 2022, 18:27

More painting progress!

First unit of "solid" bow - these will be set up with shieldbearers in a front rank protecting the archers.

Another unit of warriors as blades, including that heron pāmitl banner:

And whatever happened to that "Robin Hood" fellow, anyway? ;-)

Fantastic painting! I've always loved your projects and I'm certain this army will also turn out fantastically!

A few more units complete!

More "fast" bowmen. I'm pretty happy with how the middle guy came out - he's a hybrid of an Aztec slinger and a Robin Hood archer, and looked kind of awkward to me before I got him painted.

More "solid" bowmen and warriors. The third guy over (with the skull shield) is another conversion, but one I'm not quite as satisfied with. He started off as a slinger, but I gave him the arms from a different warrior to get another pose with shield and maquahuital. In retrospect the sleeveless look doesn't seem quite right, though. Oh well, probably will notice or care except me. :-)

Some Atlantic Egyptians paint-converted as skirmishing archers. They have the dark "facemask" facepaint seen on some of the Lienzo de Tlaxcala opponents, and jaguar-skin quivers to help them look a little more Mesoamerican. I had debated using more of these guys to help fill out the ranks, but they looked odd next to the Revell figures - they are noticeably taller and skinnier. (Also, their kilts don't look quite right for the period.) Still, on a base by themselves I think they'll do fine.

Finally, one last unit of suited warriors, featuring some of the head swaps I showed before. The back-banner on the first figure is mostly thin cardstock, with a bit of the framework from one of the banners in the Caesar set.

I agree with all the comments above: very nice figures, nice pictures, great color scheme, and so original a subject :-) Moreover, your painting style is unique :yeah:
Can't wait for the whole army on display.

I absolutely agree with others. I do too want to see it finished... maybe a nice jungle diorama... with pyramide (if that is historically correct)

It seems to be for wargaming. So what we can expect is a cool wargaming table...

I have been fortunate enough to visit the Tlaxcalan area some 30 years ago. I had a friend who was born in Puebla, a real descendant of the Tlaxcaltecs, and he invited me in his house there. Puebla is located in the highlands, just 15 km south of Tlaxcala, 70 km south east of Mexico. No jungle here, but dry lands at more than 2000 meters high.
But maybe the Tlaxcalan warriors were raiding far south, into ancient Maya cities to the south.

Hello Kaiphranos,
I like how you extract from a few historic paintings such a lot of varied and beautifully painted figures. You are convincing
Greetings

I love the texture of the suits on the last unit of Aztec warriors, great to see the project coming together (also good idea with converting Atlantic Egyptians).

Wonderful work, I do like them a lot.
Always dreamed of doing some Mayan's or Aztecs as well.
Your work increases my desire to do it even more.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! DBA armies traditionally include a camp and some (usually) non-combatant camp followers, so I hope to do those eventually. (I have a few ideas in mind, but also a backlog of armies needing camp followers...) Meanwhile, here are the next few units!

More bowmen, with shieldbearers and without:

These are supposed to be a unit of allied Otomi "fast warband." I was not able to find much by way of a description for these fellows, but I attempted to tie them together visually with red and white striped face paint and red-striped shields:

Finally, an alternative stand for the general if I want to deploy him as a Bow unit rather than a Blade unit:

With these done, I have finished all the Tlaxcalans proper, but there may be an upcoming visit by a few new friends from overseas...

Yes, only can agree with all above.
Really good choices for conversions and even more so for the painting schemes. So good ideas and realization. Love them all
Cheers
