Belisarius

I love the conversion work for these; I particularly like it when people put their own spin on armies. The history segments are fascinating as well, thanks for the insight on Belisarius' army. Love your work!

I am impressed from your deep research and your wonderful alternations of figures. Please continue! I am curious and thirsty of informations. I have a project too in this period, only 100 years later with the battle of Yarmuk.

Thank you all for your encouragements !
It's a pleasure to share the stages of this project with you ... I must also admit that I like the figurines part as much as the one that precedes it, where you have to read as much as possible to get into the subject. !!

I'm starting to get an idea of the units that will be built ... not to mention those that will be reused later.
(not mentionning my comites Alani i could use withour probleme i think : https://comitatusgaulois.wordpress.com/2015/12/28/comites-alani-compagnons-alains/
2x4 Slavic medium infantry (Orion)
2x4 Byzantine heavy shield infantry (Orion)
2x4 Roman Late Heavy Infantry (MiniArt)
2x4 late Roman infantry (Italeri... i need more of them, but it seems that the market doesn't propose it anymore :eh: )
3x2 late Roman archers (2 italeri and 1 mini art)
1x2 goth archers (Hät)
1x2 Slavic archers (Orion)
1x2 Byzantine archers (Orion)
1x2 Slavic slingers (Orion)
1x2 Roman javelins (MiniArt)
1x2 Isaurian javelins (Hät... El cid light infantry !)
2x3 regular heavy cavalry (Hät, roman and sassanids mixed)
2x2 light heruli riders (Hät el cid light cav modified)
Image
1X2 Huns riders (Lucky toyx mixed with others brands)
and...
4x3 Bucellarii (a big mix between Zvezda Sarmatian, Orion, Italeri Goths, MiniArt late roman, Hät Goths...)
Image

@ Sansovino : the sad battle of Yarmouk !! With Mandzikert, two battles who litterally changed the world of the eastern part of the mediterranean...
Unfortunately except for the orion set, you will find not many possibilities for your byzantine army...
@OwenChpw : conversion is my favourite part !!! i should try greenstuff one day....
@ToneTW ; Giorgio Ravegnani is very helpfull, and as i wrote before there is a lot of his work free online (academica is now my best friend !!)

Thanks Chariobaude,
for your extensive answer on the composition of the army. Keep on working we will follow! As Tone wrote: really interesting period but also mysterious and not so well known.

Hello Chariobaude
exotic challenging subject and really nicely treated with all your research.
The story of Belosarius is fascinating. Certainly one of the characters who gave the supremacy and existance of East Rome for the next centuries a big push.
Also, very interesting and mixed in Armies.
... and I like the conversion topics, too.
Salutations de la Normandie

I have already begun to convert existing byzantine or late roman soldiers. I have stop it only in hope to see from Hät or Linear A new figures, but I think to continue soon again with the conversions. Hät will deliver probably theirs byzantines in 10 years or more - and than 21 years after they had presented theirs roughs on the homepage.

Please share with us what you have already done !!!!
Hät is a strange brand : capable of both the best and the worst. Great achievements as well as disastrous results, of leaving sets over the same period at ... 12 year intervals, not to mention the total lack of respect for the size of their figurines!
Their last Sassanids are very very nice (even if a bit little too small). I've made them romans : equites sagitarri clibanarii : https://comitatusgaulois.wordpress.com/2020/02/29/equites-sagittarii-clibanarii-cavaliers-archers-clibanaires/

I'll use their horses for my regular cavalrymen of Belisarius !

I had to search, where are my byzantines. Here are some roughs, 4-5 years old and not finished!
I don´t know still the name of the different units, but you will do it certainly - I presume. I admire your works to the late romans.
The figures are Haet, Italeri or Miniart.

@Sansovino : i'll come back ith more detailed information on the units, but i guess your inspiration for some helmets was the "David vs Goliath" Plate ?Image
it seems that it was a protection against corrosion, but obviously, because they were made of fabric, none survived...
The choice is good, this plate has been made in order to celebrate Heraclian victories against Sassanids, so perfect timeframe ! :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:
As you can see on the plate, the shield pattern is not a" poetic view" but the reproduction of an existing model, of one of these two units:

Thank you for sharing !!
@ToneTW: it's your time to share your late romans ;-)
El cid andalusians and some numids could be pretty usefull for me, depicting ghassanids allies... Too much possibilities !! :-D

What a wonderful creative exchange of knowledge and minature cultures, thanks a lot for it!

Unfortunatly my applebook was robbed with most of my digital uniform-plates 3 years ago. I have still some printed pages, which I don´t find them at instant for this period.
The strange soldiers with a cap with long feathers above theirs chainmail are byzantines of 7th century. Osprey present them as cavalry, but some byzantine blogs as infantry too. Many byzantine headgears of this period are looking for me with theirs very high toppings like pheasants or cocks. Most of these headgears seems me very uncomfortable especially for hot or desert temperatures - eventually one more reason why they lost against the arabs?
My byzantines are still roughs, so some details has still to be add or carved. So the backside of the cock-headgear has still to be correct and to cut lower.
I am not a specialist for byzantines uniforms why I am thankful for every useful comment.
The last group of my presented soldiers are allied light infantry....

sharing around our passion for figs and history is THE reason for my presence on this forum and my greatest pleasure !
It is not so easy to find representations of the army of Heraclius. On the other hand, for those who are interested, we know almost everything about his organization, his tactics, his training and his enemies by reading his work, the strategikon : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategikon_of_Maurice

Nevertheless, here are some representations of the famous "rooster crest"! :

if the conquest of Africa by Belisarius was as brilliant as it was rapid, it was as much because of the genius of Belisarius as of the circumstances: the vandals had demolished all the ramparts of the Roman cities, the confrontation in pitched battle was as inevitable as it was decisive. . In Italy, on the other hand, it was years of siege and ambushes.
so, I think and I draw ... ;-)

Time to give you some news of the project guys !

Preview one : boukellarioi

I'm still waiting for Linear-A Justinian's range (since last september...), and in the meantime I made (a small) part of the army of Belisarius and Narses.

the first troops to be reviewed will be the Boukellarioi (in greek, Bucellarii in latin, still the mother tongue of the roman army for at least a century), who were the private troops of the Roman generals. In reality, these mercenaries were less so than before, and their status approached more and more traditional units, but they still remained very attached to their leader.
In the 6th century, they were exclusively horsemen, wielding both the bow and the lance, generally heavily armed.
These men represented a part of the elite of the Roman army, on which it relied heavily. To fully understand this aspect, it suffices to say that Belisarius eradicated (one cannot use other words!) The vandal kingdom, which had terrorized the Roman world for a century, using only his cavallry! it will be a little different in italy, but its boukellarioi (and its regular heavy cavallry) will always represent the breaking forces of the imperial army.
The historian Procopius, usually quite reliable, wrote that Belisarius had as many as 7,000 for his African campaign, which is considerable.
My main inspiration is the dish from Isola Rizza, late 6th-early 7th centuries AD, depicting a Byzantine heavy cavalryman charging german opponents, (you can see this beauty in Castelvecchio Museum, Verona ):

let's see a close-up :

Obviously, there is many lovely artworks on internet, depicting heavy byzantine cavalry, boukellarioi or regular one.We will see these in the next preview.
Some artwork :

And now, my interpretation :

for the moment i've made 12 boukellarioi, pretty different from my bucellarii i've made before, depicting more irregular privates- by clicking here you can see them

Chariobaude: as always, the amount of research & effort you put into your hobby is amazing.

I'm sure I would like to read your blog....but I don't speak French. It's my daughter-in-law's native language & though she's a lovely girl, I don't think I could ask her to sit & translate for me.

I really would like to get my hands on some of the Miniart sets to try some conversions too.
