WW2 Tiger II and Sdkfz 251

Posted by dombom on 10 Feb 2021, 10:34

The Panzerkampfwagen VI "Tiger II" was a late war tank of the German army.
Thick armoured and equipped with one of the best tank guns, it was superior to any allied and soviet tanks (except for the IS3).
It was so feared, that it's enemies usually tried to avoid direct confrontation and rather shelled it by artillery or called for air support.
Despite its overwhelming tank abilities, it still had the major German tank flaws, such as: high fuel consumption, motor breakdowns due to its overweight, low quality steel due to a lack of Molybdän and slow speed.
Most of these tanks were destroyed by its own crew due to lack of fuel and breakdowns.

The reason why I choose this model for my next diorama was simply the fact that I still had that model from my childhood days and it was so ugly, that I couldn't stand it anymore.
I stripped down the old paint, repaired some parts and then started with the now look.
The SdKfz251 I had also left from old times and I thought it would be a nice addon.

And here you go:

Good made and weathered German tracked and half tracked vehicle.
The soft scratches on the side wall of the 251 are well made.
Be careful to pet the cat !
the 88mm Claw hurt a bit.

:yeah:

Great weathering and snow indeed! How did you do it?

I used two chippping techniques and some painting. The snow is nothing else, but some white color with sand.
For the rust I used different colors of pigments mixed with matt varnish. The pigments then clump up a bit and create this rusty and uneven surface.
If you like more details, feel free to PM me ;-)

Long it has been since I was working on this topic, but I just nearly completed another project and returned to this one.
I did some minor update on the battle tank by opening a hatch and adding the commander.

Next I will do the rest of the tank crew and I have to start thinking about the overall scenery. I plan to do a heavy snowy landscape with some soldiers resting in their trenches and a well comouflaged tank.
But what will be the porpose of this high alerted SdKfZ? Maybe they prepare for battle?
I need some pretty ideas...

Hm, suggestion: the Tiger ran out of fuel in an awkward location. The Sdkfz is bringing some jerrycans to get it moving again, but as the situation is dangerous all crews are alert.

Not a bad idea.
I think I will do something like that. Another few fuel canisters and some guys unloading it from the SdKfZ or something like that :-)

Those figures look nice but maybe they need a red nose! It's cold out there! :-D

Russian front? Battle of the bulge? They are lost in the Ardennes because some stupid German commandos changed the road signs!

Hahahaha, good idea :D
Red noses and the idea with the signs, I like it both.
Yeah, I was kinda thinking of the Ardennes.
Russian front will be probably the next project. Will see.

Very nice indeed and those latest figures are super , you can feel the cold.

I was however, wondering if the barrel has slipped as it appears out of true to the sleeve?

It’s possibly optical.

Keep up the good work.

Best wishes,

Chris

Forgive me my nitpickery - but around the motor ventilation on the Tigers' backside should be neither frost nor snow, just because - as long as the tank is active - it's warm there. ;-)

Haha, you are right :D I did fix it already.
Not sure why it was like that, probably because this model is about 20 years old.
It was from my childhood and I started repainting some of my old models.

You are absolutely right. Actually I didnt put any snow there. I added "water" to immitate molten snow.
It somehow looks a bit like ice though :D
